What Does an Emergency Locksmith Actually Do?
An emergency locksmith is simply a locksmith who takes urgent calls outside normal hours and comes to you. The work ranges from a two-minute car door opening to rebuilding the security of a home after a break-in.
Common emergency jobs
- Lockouts from homes, apartments, offices and vehicles.
- Broken keys stuck in a door lock or ignition.
- Lost or stolen keys, where rekeying stops the missing key from working.
- Break-in damage: replacing forced locks and securing the door so you are not left exposed overnight.
- Failed locks that will not lock or will not open.
What to have ready when you call
- Your exact location, including unit number or parking level.
- The type of lock or the vehicle's make, model and year.
- Photo ID, and if possible something showing your address or vehicle registration.
This lets the dispatcher give you an accurate quote and send a technician with the right parts.
When to call 911 first
If a child, vulnerable adult or pet is locked inside a hot car or a home and is in danger, call 911 before you call a locksmith. Emergency services can act immediately.
About pricing
Emergency work can cost more than a scheduled visit, so ask for the price before the technician leaves for your address and confirm it again before work starts. A trustworthy locksmith will be clear about both.
